Dr. Scott Noren, US Senate Candidate Calls For National Ban On Hydrofracturing Of Natural Gas
Dr. Scott Noren, US Senate Candidate in NY attended and spoke at the DEC Meeting in Ithaca for public comments on the DEC document regarding Marcellus Shale gas drilling/fracking. After the exposure from many sources about contamination and drilling mishaps, Dr. Noren has now announced that he is in favor of a National ban on fracking. This follows also from expert testimony by leading experts in engineering, gas/oil drilling experts and land owners where accidents have occurred.
Dr. Noren opposes any new studies because he feels that "we already know the likely eventual consequences; ruining of the waterways and aquaphors". Dr. Noren also states that "the end-all result is an environmental and social catastrophe of immense magnitude for NY". Studies additionally cost tax-payer money. "We should instead make New York a manufacturing hub for infrastructure in wind, solar and geothermal products and services, thereby creating large numbers of well-paying jobs".
Dr. Noren also signed a petition to ban fracking.
The Governor appointed Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand appears to both promote fracking and advise more time and studies on the issue per her Press Release. A portion of this reads: "The Marcellus Shale represents a tremendous economic opportunity for New York, and I commend DEC for recognizing the importance of harvesting and producing new sources of energy to address the growing need for energy throughout the state. However, our quest for new sources of energy and potential economic growth should not come at the expense of good, clean air and safe drinking water for all New Yorkers," Senator Gillibrand wrote in her letter to New York Governor David Paterson. "New York has an abundant supply of fresh, clean water, and we must learn from the accidents that other states have already experienced to avoid damage to our own precious natural resources."
Dr. Noren states, "You can see she is speaking from a position that clearly entertains the idea that fracking could be permissible if assurances can be made for it's safety. My contention is that it will never be proven safe enough to ensure that our water supply will not be in danger. She is clear on this and should be held to her word".
